Dreams Can Come True!

The story of how the BBC brought back the sound of 1960s offshore pirate radio.

This Easter marks two very special anniversaries. It’s 60 years since pirate radio began off the Essex coast playing pop music all day long.

20 years ago, BBC Essex presenter Steve Scruton achieved a lifetime ambition to recreate those magical sounds and ‘Pirate BBC Essex’ was born broadcasting once again from the sea onboard the historic LV18 off of Harwich. The station gained international attention with many of the original 60s DJs joining the celebration to relive their younger days.

Join us on Easter Monday (1st April) as Steve tells the story of how he managed to persuade the BBC (no fan of the offshore broadcasters) to set up a station that would pay tribute to the ‘pirates’ and how they changed radio forever. Hear about the challenges that were faced and relive the memories that were made. Plus you can meet some of the legendary 60s DJs including Roger “Twiggy” Day and Keith Skues who joined Steve and the BBC Essex team to make it happen.

Tickets are £12 with all proceeds going to restore the LV18 after the devastating fire which ripped through the vessel earlier this year. With your help, we can keep this piece of Harwich history alive and the dreams that it has fulfilled for so many.
