Tendring Thunderbirds (U)

Tendring Thunderbirds

A concert to celebrate the life and legacy of Electric Palace Trust Chairman Chris Strachan.

It is safe to say the Electric Palace would not be here today if it were not for the efforts of Chris Strachan. Chris was Trustee Chairman for more than 30 years. He was also an accomplished jazz trumpeter and ensured the music was enshrined in the fabric of the Electric Palace.

Chris's main ensemble was The Tendring Thunderbirds, a flexible local group of musicians playing jazz in the tradition of New Orleans but with a contemporary vibe.

The "Thunderboids", as Chris pronounced them, were formed at the beginning of this century and were a regular attraction for many years playing to an enthusiastic and packed house.

The Electric Palace is proud to reunite a number of the Thunderbirds for a very special concert to celebrate the legacy of Chris at the Electric Palace two days before what would have been his birthday. All profits will go towards the Memorial Fund in his name.

Stepping into Chris's shoes as trumpeter and band leader is Paul Higgs, who guested several times with the Thunderbirds. Paul is no stranger to Ronnie Scott's Club and has played with the likes of the BBC Philharmonic Orchestra, Johnny Dankworth, John Williams, Tony Hatch, Nancy Wilson and Lulu, to name but a few.

He will be joined on stage by Alan Arnold bass, Kevin Harris drums, Evan Jones saxophone, Tom Monahan trombone, John Parker guitar and Carl Sterling saxophone for what will be a fun-filled and uplifting night of hot Crescent City jazz in the good old "Thunderboids" spirit.

California Schemin' (15)

California Schemin'

In the late 1990s, Gavin Bain and Billy Boyd had their musical ambitions consistently ridiculed for having the 'wrong' accents, so they went for broke and reinvented themselves as Californian rappers. The duo re-recorded their own tracks with fake accents and turned up in London claiming to be an established duo on the Cali scene as well as childhood friends with Eminem. They quickly bagged themselves a record deal, a hefty sum in advances, and an appearance on MTV... until it all came crashing down.

Film183: The Sting (PG)

Film183: The Sting

Film183 presents The Sting

The Sting (1973) remains one of the great American entertainments: a caper film of immaculate construction, buoyed by charm, wit and a nostalgic affection for the confidence men of the 1930s. Yet revisiting it now carries a particular poignancy. With the recent death of Robert Redford, the film stands as one of the clearest expressions of his star persona—effortless, quick witted, and irresistibly charismatic.

As Johnny Hooker, the small time grifter drawn into an audacious long con, Redford gives a performance of extraordinary lightness. He moves through the film with a dancer’s precision, balancing boyish mischief with a growing moral seriousness.

Redford’s chemistry with Paul Newman—reuniting after Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid—is the film’s beating heart, but The Sting also showcases Redford’s gift for anchoring a narrative without ever overwhelming it. His Hooker is both the audience’s surrogate and the engine of the plot, a young man learning the rules of deception while discovering his own sense of honour.

In celebrating The Sting, we celebrate Redford himself: a performer whose grace, intelligence and understated magnetism shaped American cinema for more than half a century. Tonight’s screening is a reminder of just how brightly he shone.
