About Vera:
“I couldn’t tell you when my interest in film started, because it was always there. My parents were very liberal about what we were allowed to watch, and because I was tall, I was able to get into screenings that the British Board of Film Classification deemed unsuitable. Being brought up in Harwich, we were weekly visitors to the Electric Palace and the Ipswich Film Theatre. I used to pounce on the monthly ‘what’s on’ guides as soon as they came through the letterbox. In addition to this, I ripped pages from the Radio Times, circling the films I wanted to see, and then posting the pages to an uncle who had Sky TV, and who would tape the films for me and post me the video cassettes.
After the Harwich School, I did foundation art at the Suffolk College, where, during a film making module, my tutor mentioned that I had a talent for editing. I then spent 10 years editing in different capacities, making my own films, assisting other editors, cutting extreme sports TV, before enrolling at the National Film and Television School (NFTS), where I edited the Oscar nominated, and BAFTA winning short, The Bigger Picture (Dir. Daisy Jacobs).
I now edit independent shorts and features, mostly documentaries, as well as being a visiting tutor at UCL and the NFTS.
This talk will be an introduction to editing, both fiction and documentary, with film clips and stills, there will also be a chance to ask me any questions you might have about the best job in film (honestly!)”
